San Diego Lifestyle Photographer // Marisa + Michael

IMG_7123

This girl needs no introduction… but her boy does.  He may be young, but he is old school… the kind who opens doors for girls and shares his jacket when his lady is cold and most importantly, is nice to moms everywhere.  He is awesome and so sweet.  So when Marisa asked him to dress up for a session on the beach, he simply smiled and asked her what he should wear.  See?  Awesome.

The day of the shoot, there was rain forecasted and the wet stuff came down on and off all day.  I even bought umbrellas thinking that I might have to change the direction of the styling I initially had for the photos.  Then, around the time we got to the beach, the clouds cleared up a bit and the sun came out.  For a good 45 minutes, we shot like crazy.  As soon as we went back into the house, it poured.  So, I kind of figured these were meant to be.

The holiday season begins…

I always find the holiday season the most difficult time of the year to get things done.  On top of the regular grind of day to day life, there is the added stress of finding the perfect gifts, making the perfect meals, and hosting the perfect parties.  The stress of it always makes me want to move to some remote island until January.  This season, I’m attempting to change and get back into the holiday spirit of things.  So, as I wind down on the sessions and get photos processed for Christmas cards and gifts, blogging may be a little light.  I’ll get back into the swing of things as soon as life settles down a bit.

In the meantime, here’s a little something that I think back on when I need to take a chill pill…

Family Session // The Vaughans

Sarah & her kids are some of my favorite repeat clients.  I began photographing Sarah way back when her little man was a teeny tiny thing… through her pregnancy with Cassette, to the present and everything in between.  She was one of the first people who believed in what I did and just rolled with it as I learned.

Since life is moving by at a breakneck speed for this little family, Sarah decided that photos on a Indian summer’s day were in order.  Since the kids would be less than pristine once we reached the sand, we got a few of the “clean shots” out of the way first…

And then on to the beach!

Almost 2-year-olds tend to get distracted along the way and think the destination might not be all that it’s cracked up to be…

But they recover nicely when told they can finally go play!

When I pointed my camera in his direction, Noe gave me this:

… when he really felt like doing this:

As he wasn’t really in the mood to get sandy and wanted to “gooooo noooow, moooooom,” I just let him do his own thing.  He eventually came around.  Cassette, however, enjoyed every minute of it!

Personal // A Really Big Deal

This is my new front door…

IMG_2975

… and my new neighbors.

And this is my new front yard…

IMG_3064

When I was a kid, I hated where I lived.  It was hot.  It was in the middle of suburbia.  I felt stuck.  My goal?  When I was old enough to get my own apartment, my goal was to move west.  To the west were cooler temperatures, open spaces, golden sunlight and the ocean… the place I always went when I needed to just spend some time to myself.

When I was grew up and became an adult, I turned into a city girl.  I moved to an old neighborhood, right outside a vibrant, beautiful city, full of character and fascinating people.  I loved my home and I loved the proximity to everything.

The last few years, despite everything I ever promised myself, I found myself back in the suburbs.  While there started out being a few advantages, they quickly lost their luster and I have been trying to find a way back to a place I felt could be home.

Today I picked up my keys to an apartment 75 steps from the sand.  I feel like I am back in my element.  To say I am excited is an understatement.  :)
