Personal // Billy Joel & Portland, Oregon

I have a few loves in my life… the ones that make my world go ’round.  Without question, photography & music are two subjects that speak to my soul.  And so, in trying to write this post, I turned to them to help me find the words.

The end of 2010 was a tough one.  It wrought changes in my personal life that I hadn’t planned on.  Changes that picked me up out of my cozy existence, shook me up considerably, and then made me come face to face with some tough decisions.  After doing some intense soul-searching, I realized that in order to grow and become the person I want to be, I need to leave San Diego.  San Diego is home.  San Diego is comfortable.  San Diego holds innumerable people and memories that are more dear to me than I can say.  But for now, for me, San Diego has become static.  And those reasons above, that once made it a haven, are now the reasons that San Diego and I need to spend some time apart.

As of February 23, 2011, I will no longer be available in San Diego on a regular basis.  I am in the process of creating a calendar on the blog to show my travel schedule.  Please check back frequently to see if/when I will be in your area.  If you have already booked an event in Southern California after February 23, your date is still booked and I will be traveling to San Diego to photograph your event at no additional cost to you.

As to some of the other loves in my life, as of March 1, 2011, I will be realizing a life-long dream when I set up temporary residence in Portland, OR.  I also plan to spend a large portion of the next year near Seattle, WA.

The images below are some I took when I visited Portland in October and spent some time acquainting myself with my new home…

I’ll end with one more guilty pleasure.  If you know me, you probably know that Billy Joel’s songs run through my veins.  In thinking of what I wanted to write tonight and the journey I’ve taken to get to this point, I found inspiration in the verses below.  You can be sure that when I hit the road in February, he’ll be along for the ride.

Billy Joel – Got to Begin Again

Well so here I am at the end of the road
Where do I go from here?
I always figured it would be like this
Still nothing seems to be quite clear

All the words have been spoken and the prophecy fulfilled
But I just can’t decide where to go
Yes, it’s been quite a day and I should go to sleep
But tomorrow I will wake up and I’ll know

That I’ve got to begin again
Though I don’t know how start
Yes, I’ve got to begin again
And it’s hard

**PS… for Portland peeps and FINDers, yes, that is Kjrsten Madsen in one of the city shots above.  She spent some time wooing me to P-town when I visted lasted summer. :)
